Wildlife Viewing in Pagosa Country
Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant in the Pagosa Springs area and almost guaranteed if you venture off the beaten path, whether on a hike or during a scenic drive into the surrounding national forest.
To guarantee sighting most of the area's wildlife, check out the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park. The park is a great place to see wildlife up close, with a half mile trail that wanders around the large, natural landscape with cages that house bears, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, wolves and elk. The Park is located a few miles east of Pagosa Springs on Hwy 84. Stop by the Pagosa Springs Visitor Center and grab a brochure or call 970-264-5546 for more information.
Another option is to take a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, located in Chama, NM, only 45 miles away. Large herds of elk are often seen from the train.
The San Juan mountains and Pagosa area are also home to a variety of birds. Many types can be found during a drive on the beautiful Piedra Road.
