Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

“USA Today 10Best” readers say that the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the best train ride in North America as well as the top attraction in both New Mexico and Colorado. The Cumbres & Toltec traverses 64-miles between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO.  It crosses the borders of Colorado and New Mexico 11 times as it chugs its way up and over the 10,015′ high Cumbres Pass.

Our scenic railroad is jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. In recognition for its place in our national history, it was awarded National Historic Landmark Designation in 2012. We’ve been operating under this prestigious designation ever since.

Tracks Across Borders Byway

Imagine a journey that winds through 800 years of Southwestern history, connecting ancient civilizations with vibrant modern communities, all against a backdrop of natural beauty. That’s the Tracks Across Borders Scenic and Historic Byway, which travels through two states, Native American cultures, breathtaking countryside, treaties, and technology, across ancient and historic times, and varied communities of the present day. From the romance of the rails and authentic Native American culture to spectacular scenery and a myriad of recreational opportunities, Colorado’s and New Mexico's newest Byway is a richly layered time capsule offering the back road traveler a comprehensive experience. But the Byway is much more than a road; it's a living testament to the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad's pivotal role in the West's expansion. Today, visitors can still ride the legendary Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge and Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroads, experiencing a piece of that legacy firsthand. Our route also reverently passes through the ancestral lands of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and the Jicarilla Apache Nation, unveils the historic charm of Hispano churches in Tiffany and Juanita, and showcases awe-inspiring natural wonders like Navajo Lake and Chimney Rock National Monument. Come and drive or bike the Byway.
